"Martha! Breakfast!", her mother yelled from the bottom of the stairs.
Martha shot out of bed, wide awake. She had been for a while, actually, because today was a special day. Today was the day she would see the ocean!
Martha bombarded her mother with questions as she ate her breakfast:
"When are we leaving?"
"How long can we stay?"
Martha couldn't contain herself. She was too excited to see the ocean.
Martha wanted to go so bad, but mom had made all of her favorites for breakfast:
When she was finally done, she put on her brand new bathing suit, and they were off to Playa del Otoño!
Martha always fell asleep in cars, so luckily for her, it felt like only minutes before they arrived. She jumped out of the car and ran to the beach, tossing her flip-flops in the sand.
It was breathtaking, unlike anything she'd ever seen before. The sand was warm and soft like a cloud, and the ocean was serene and infinite.
While her parents grabbed their towels, chairs, and picnic basket from the trunk, Martha got started collecting shells. She had told all her friends about her trip and had promised each one a souvenir. After she'd found the perfect shells for Billy, Tommy, Betsy, Jeanine, and Dan, she stumbled upon the most beautiful shell of all. She picked it up and ran to her mother.
Her mother suggested that they make it into a necklace so that she could wear it, and Martha loved the idea! She would wear her shell for forever.
Martha spent the whole day playing in the waves, then on the sand, then in the waves again, then back on the sand. She even found a turtle laying on its back, so she flipped it right-side-up and helped it get where it was going.
She and her family had a picnic, watched the sunset, and said one last goodbye before packing up and going home.
Martha had the best day ever at Playa del Otoño, and slept the whole way home.
